Caregiver Leaves

Dear Sisters and Brothers;

For many years, CUPE and the rest of the Labour Movement along with many social activist groups, have been pushing various and consecutive governments to guarantee job security for caregivers who need time off of work.  The Ontario Ministry of Labour has now announced, under the Employment Standards Act, “unpaid” leaves of absence to address the following issues:

  • Up to eight (8) weeks job-protected, unpaid leave to care for and support a family member with a serious medical condition
  • Critically Ill Child Care Leave of up to thirty-seven (37) weeks of job-protected, unpaid leave to provide care to a critically ill child
  • Crime Related Child Death or Disappearance of up to fifty-two (52) weeks of job-protected, unpaid leave for parents of a missing child, and
  • Up to one hundred and four (104) weeks of job-protected, unpaid leave for parents of a child who has died as the result of a crime

I sincerely and truly hope that none of our members will need to access these new provisions, but in the event that you do, you can be assured that your job security is intact and your employment will still be there when you return.  Please do not hesitate to call the Union Office at (905)544-7733 if you need our services or assistance in accessing this leave.

In Solidarity,
Arch Walker
President
